About
Jamaica
The quintessential sights and sounds of Jamaica, the island nation located
south of Cuba in the Caribbean Sea, include the twanging of steel drums,
women transporting bags atop their heads, the grilling of jerk pork,
wagging dreadlocks, occasional whiffs of ganja and the buzzing of scooters,
however Jamaica has many more. A British colony for 300 years until
its independence in 1962, Jamaica has persevered through a tumultuous
history of Spanish conquest, slavery and heated political elections,
which have stirred passion and strengthened its culture. For example,
Rastafarianism, a religion that believes in the divinity of a former
Ethiopian emperor, along with some of the messages of Jamaican Marcus
Garvey, have produced a unique breed of art and music which have influenced
a strong segment of the country’s identity. Go!
