The Active Hawaii

Heard enough about luaus, volcanoes, grass skirts and leis? Take a hike! Or a snorkel. Or a bike ride.

Snorkeling tours on all the islands are available for both non-swimmers and experienced divers. Or try a four-wheel-drive expedition on Kauai backroads or to the heart of Kauai that also includes a hike. Or how about a bike-and-hike on the private roads of Grove Farm Plantation?

The best snorkeling on the island of Kauai is inside its protective reefs. If you choose a guided tour, your price will probably include the use of professional quality equipment and instruction on how to use it, as well as what you might expect to see. And of course how to snorkel and look good doing it!

At Lawai Beach, the reef is about 50 yards from the shore and the water inside the reef is 8 to 10 feet deep. Here you'll find a huge variety of species, including surgeon fishes, butterfly fishes and tangs, wrasses and puffers. If you're more advanced in snorkeling, you might visit another nearby area inhabited by Pacific green sea turtles.

The back-roads crowd will want to see "the wettest place on earth," Mt. Waialeale, at the center of Kauai. Fasten your seatbelts and four-wheel on the bumpy roads inland from Wailua past Opaekaa Falls to the Keahua Arboretum. The trail crosses streams and winds through dense forest to the "Gate" used in the movie "Jurassic Park." You park at the gate and hike the natural environment, roughly three miles.

And don't forget your rain gear, because the weather can be unpredictable. Heavy rain will put your adventure on hold, but a light rain can just add to it.

One word of caution though: if you have back or neck problems, are have a tendency to motion sickness or are not at least moderately fit, you might want to consider something a little less vigorous.

Some of the most exciting and beautiful areas of Kauai are just a
bike-and-hike away! You can begin with the legendary estate of Grove Farm Plantation, formerly a 22,000 acre sugar plantation. A ride through Kauai's only sugar cane tunnel opens out to the spectacular tropical panorama on the other side.

Take a short tour of the mill, then hit the bike trail again where you'll see the Grove farm in action. When you get to the beach, you can stop for a picnic and swim in a sandy bottom lagoon. Then it's back to your wheels for a short ride to the trailhead.

At the trailhead you'll walk along the stunning Mahaulepu coastline to a lovely little beach area where, depending on the time of year, you just might see turtles, porpoises and whales.

Plenty of tours and adventures for the physically active Hawaii traveler are available on all the islands. Glorious!
